3. Components and game start

With 3 players, each player receives:

  • The four domes of his color
  • 6 Palace pieces of each color (24 total)
  • 4 stables
  • 8 inhabitants
  • 10 walls
With 4 players, each player receives:
  • The four domes of his color
  • 5 Palace pieces of each color (20 total)
  • 3 stables
  • 6 inhabitants
  • 8 walls

On a players turn he plays any two of his pieces on any empty space on the board, following the placement rules. When only one player is left with pieces, at least one dome must be played per turn.

Palace pieces:

  • Players may start a new palace on any empty non-wall space in the city, except they may not place it orthogonally or diagonally adjacent to any palace piece already on the board. This leaves space between all palaces for a street. When players choose to add on to a palace already on the board, they must place it in a space orthogonally adjacent to one of the existing pieces of that palace.
  • There is no limit to the size of a palace.
  • All players build the different colored palaces together. As long as a palace has no dome, it is incomplete and unclaimed.
  • There can be only one incomplete palace of each color.
  • When a player places a dome on an incomplete palace, the palace is completed and claimed by that player.
  • If there is no legal space orthogonally adjacent to an incomplete palace for a palace piece to be played, then the palace is completed, but is not claimed.
  • Players may not add palace pieces to complete palaces.
  • When there are no incomplete palaces of a color on the board, a player may begin a new palace of that color. All of the palace building rules listed above apply.
  • When all players have claimed a palace of one of the colors, palace pieces of that color may no longer be played.
Domes
  • Each player has four domes. Placing a dome on a palace claims it and completes it.
  • Each player may claim one of each of the four palace colors.
  • The number of palace pieces in a palace determines the value of the palace
Stables
  • A stable may be played on an empty border or interior (not wall) space orthogonally adjacent to a palace piece.
  • Each stable attached to (adjacent to) a palace adds 1 point to the palace's value.
  • A space must be left for streets between palaces.
  • Stables may not be placed orthogonally adjacent to another stable.
Inhabitants:
  • Inhabitants represent the markets in Medina.
  • Initially there is just one market. Other markets may be started if the original market cannot be expanded.
  • An inhabitant may be placed at either end of the market.
  • Inhabitants are placed in the empty border or interior space orthogonally adjacent to an inhabitant at one of the ends of the market.
  • Inhabitant may not be adjacent to two or more inhabitants.
  • If the market cannot be expanded, a new market may be started.
  • Inhabitants add 1 point to any palace that they are orthogonally adjacent to.
Walls:
  • Walls are placed on the wall spaces around the edge of the board.
  • Walls must be placed next to existing wall segments or a tower.
  • At least one wall space must be left empty along each side of the board.
