Carcassonne
Game of the Year 2001

1. Preparation

From the chat window:

Type  /join and press Enter to join the game;
Type  /start  and press Enter to begin the game (2-5 players)
Type  /oldstart  and press Enter to begin the game with original farmer scoring

Or if you prefer, you can use the game administration tools.

The start tile is placed on the board to begin the game. The starting player is chosen at random, with the current player's name enclosed in **.

2. Objective

Together the players build a landscape of cities and roads. Each player tries to get the most points by placing their figures (Knights/Farmers) in cities, on roads, on cloisters, or in meadows.

3. Turn Summary

On your turn, you receive a randomly drawn landscape tile. Place the tile by clicking the desired area on the board. Tiles must be placed so that at least one edge is connected to an existing tile, and all edges match those on the connecting tiles. The tile may be rotated using the blue arrow displayed above the tile .

Subsequently you may place a Knight or Farmer on that tile (and only on that tile). The tile has small squares representing placement for the roads, cities, cloisters and meadows. Simply click on the appropriate square.

Note that you may NOT place a figure in an area already containing 1 or more figures. But areas may be joined together by careful placement of subsequent tiles causing multiple figures to occupy a single area.

If you chose not to place a figure on this turn, simply click the red 'X' in the lower right corner.

4. Scoring

Points are awarded to the player(s) with the most figures in an area. If there is a tie, all tied players receive the same points. After scoring, all figures in the scored area are returned to their owners.

Points are awarded as follows:

- Cities:
As soon as a city is closed (no exposed edges), it scores 2 points for each tile that is part of the city, and 2 points for each shield symbol in the city. If a city remains open after the last tile is played, it scores only 1 point per tile and 1 point per shield symbol.

Exception: if a city consists of only 2 tiles, it scores only 1 point per tile.

- Roads:
As soon as a Road is closed, it scores 1 point for each tile that is part of the road. Roads end at crossings (tiles in which 3 or 4 sides are roads). If a road remains open after the last tile is played, it scores 1 point for each tile. The completed road shown at left is worth 7 points.

- Cloisters:
As soon as a cloister is closed (all 8 adjacent tiles have been placed), it scores 9 points. If a cloister remains open after the last tile is played, is scores 1 point per adjacent tile and 1 for the cloister itself.

- Meadows:
Meadows are only scored at the end of the game. Therefore, once a figure is placed in a meadow, it will remain until the end of the game. The players with the most Farmers in the meadow score 3 points for each closed city that is touching that field. In addition, each city may only be scored once per player.

5. Original Farmer Scoring

Original Farmer Scoring: if play began by entering "/oldstart", scoring for Farmers is slightly different. Each city is scored only once, with 4 points awarded to the player with the most Farmers touching that city (including multipe fields).

6. Screen Layout

Names of the players are in the upper righthand corner. With each name is the current score and the remaining figures (up to 7) to be played .

The current tile to be placed is shown in the lower righthand corner (see turn summary), along with the number of remaining tiles (including the tile shown). The board takes up the remaining area.

The blue numbers/letter A on the middle right can be used to adjust the viewing size of the game board (A = all). If viewing other than A, you may move the board around by clicking and dragging on the board.

WARNING: If it is your turn, do NOT click on a valid play area to drag the board, as your tile will be placed there!
