Carcassonne – Traders and Builders

The second expansion for Carcassonne

1. Getting Started

Use /join to enter the game; Use /start to begin the game (2-5 players). Alternatively you will find the same commands in the toolbar.

2. The Play

Traders and Builders is an expansion set for Carcassonne. Here we present only the new rules relevant to this expansion. The rules for the basic game can be found under Carcassonne, and for the first expansion under CC-Extension / CCErweiterung.

There are 24 new tiles added to the others. Each player also receives a pig and a builder to keep with their pieces. To turn this expansion on when in a different Carcassonne room, type /option haendler. You can also play with one or both of the River expansion and Inns and Cathedrals (CCE) expansion. Type /option fluss or /option erweiterung respectively. Or you may find it easier to use the red pawn icon in your toolbar.

3. The new pieces and commodities.

The builder is found to the right of your collection of pieces. On any turn you may place it (instead of one of your other pieces) on a road or city, providing you already have another piece on that same road or city. In future turns, whenever you place a tile that adds to the road/city on which you have your builder, you get a bonus turn. It is not possible to get more than one bonus turn at a time, even if you continue adding to the road/city. If your first piece finishes the road/city of the builder, the builder is allowed to be placed on your bonus turn.

The pig is found to the left of the builder. It may be placed in any field which already has at least one of your pieces farming. If you have the majority of farmers in this field when it is scored at the end of the game, you will receive 4 instead of 3 points for every completed city on the field.

To use a pig or builder you must click the appropriate icon first, before choosing a location on the tile. Your clicking options may change depending on which piece you have chosen.

Two new tiles are a 3-road monastery and a bent road/city (see bottom corners of picture to left). No new rules there.

There are also two tiles with road bridges on them (not pictured). A bridge doesn’t count as the end of the roads, although they may finish shortly afterwords. Fields stop at bridges however (they do not pass underneath).

The other 20 new tiles are city pieces with images of commodities (either cloth, wheat, or wine). These commodities are awarded to the player that finishes that city, whether or not they have a piece in the city. At the end of the game the player (or players) with the most cloth gets 10 points, and similarly for wheat and wine.
